National Preparedness Month Overview

September is designated as National Preparedness Month. The theme for 2019 is "Prepared, Not Scared. Be Ready for Disasters. "

The document highlights that emergencies can happen unexpectedly in any community. Preparation involves more than just building a kit; it also includes:

  • Learning lifesaving skills (e. g. , CPR and first aid).
  • Checking insurance policies for coverage against hazards like flooding and tornadoes.

The 30 Days/30 Ways Program

The Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) offers a program to help residents prepare easily.

How it works:

  • Sign Up: Participants register via the ReadyPA website.
  • Weekly Tips: Subscribers receive weekly emails containing easy tips and tools to help them get ready.
  • Survey: At the end of the month, participants complete a short survey to identify which tips were most helpful.
  • Certificate: Upon submitting the survey, participants receive a customized "ReadyPA team 30 Days/30 Ways" printable certificate.

Incentives:

  • Participation is free.
  • Participants are entered into a random drawing to win a wind-up radio/flashlight/phone charger.
