Overview

The Blair County Emergency Management Agency, in partnership with the PA Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), manages a program to reduce the transmission of West Nile virus (WNV). The initiative focuses on mosquito monitoring and collection.

Understanding West Nile Virus

  • Transmission: The virus is spread through the bite of an infected female mosquito. Mosquitoes contract the virus by feeding on infected birds and can then transmit it to humans, animals, and other birds.
  • Symptoms: While the virus can cause brain inflammation (encephphalitis), most infected people do not show symptoms.
  • Safety: WNV cannot be spread through person-to-person contact.

Mosquito Species in Blair County (2023–2025)

The following species have been collected in the area:

  • Aedes: albopictus, cinereus, vexans, altropalpus, canadensis, japonicus, triseriatus, trivittatus, sticticus, stimulans
  • Anopheles: barberi, punctipennis, quadrimaculatus s. l. , walker
  • Other Species: Coquillettidia perturbans, Culex erraticus, pipiens, restuans, salinarius, territans, Psorophora ferox, columbiae, Toxorynchites rutilus septentrionalis, Uranotaenia sapphirinia

Action Steps for Residents

To help control the mosquito population, residents are encouraged to take the following actions:

Eliminate Water Collectors

  • Remove old tires, tin cans, buckets, and flowerpots.
  • Check corrugated downspout extensions.

Prevent Puddle Formation

  • Fill in ruts in low-lying areas.
  • Repair leaking pipes or outdoor faucets.
  • Clear debris from drains and gutters.
  • Eliminate low spots on pool covers, grill covers, and tarps.

Manage Stagnant Water

  • Change or empty water in bird baths and kiddie pools.
  • Cover trash containers and recycling bins.
  • Empty drip trays for planters.
  • Fill in tree holes and stumps.

Landscape Maintenance

  • Keep grass cut short and bushes trimmed to reduce daytime resting areas for mosquitoes.
