The Problem with Mold
- Definition: Mildew and molds are fungi that thrive in moist environments. While they play a necessary role in nature by decaying organic material, they become a problem when they destroy materials inside homes.
- Growth Conditions: Mold colonies can begin growing on damp surfaces within 24 to 48 hours. They reproduce via spores that travel through the air.
- Affected Materials: Mold grows on wood products, ceiling tiles, cardboard, wallpaper, carpets, drywall, fabric, plants, foods, insulation, and decaying leaves.
- Health Risks: Beyond structural damage, mold can cause mild to severe health problems. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) notes that failure to remove contaminated materials and reduce moisture can present serious long-term health risks. Standing water and wet materials are breeding grounds for microorganisms like viruses, bacteria, and mold, which can cause disease and trigger allergic reactions.
