View original document →

Overview

This document, published by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in January 2007, serves as a guide for homeowners on how to handle mold and mildew issues following flood damage. It explains the nature of mold, its health risks, and provides resources for further assistance.

The Problem with Mold

  • Definition: Mildew and molds are fungi that thrive in moist environments. While they play a necessary role in nature by decaying organic material, they become a problem when they destroy materials inside homes.
  • Growth Conditions: Mold colonies can begin growing on damp surfaces within 24 to 48 hours. They reproduce via spores that travel through the air.
  • Affected Materials: Mold grows on wood products, ceiling tiles, cardboard, wallpaper, carpets, drywall, fabric, plants, foods, insulation, and decaying leaves.
  • Health Risks: Beyond structural damage, mold can cause mild to severe health problems. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) notes that failure to remove contaminated materials and reduce moisture can present serious long-term health risks. Standing water and wet materials are breeding grounds for microorganisms like viruses, bacteria, and mold, which can cause disease and trigger allergic reactions.
