2021 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report
Overview
The Williamsburg Municipal Authority (WMA) has released its 2021 Consumer Confidence Report. This document details the quality of drinking water provided to approximately 720 customers in Williamsburg Borough and portions of Catherine and Woodbury Townships. The water supply is sourced entirely from groundwater drawn from three production wells located in Woodbury Township.
Water Source and Infrastructure
- Source: Groundwater drawn from the Gatesburg Aquifer.
- Location: Three production wells located along Briarwood Lane, south of the intersection of Sage Hill Drive and Taylor Street.
- Treatment: The only required treatment is disinfection via the addition of chlorine.
- Capacity: The system is permitted to supply up to 1,440,000 gallons per day.
- Usage: In 2021, the system provided an average of 118,742 gallons per day (43,341,000 total gallons).
Contaminant Monitoring Results
The WMA monitored for various contaminants between January 1 and December 31, 2021. All detected regulated contaminants were within safety limits (no violations).
Disinfectants and By-Products
- Chlorine: Used to control microbes. Residual levels ranged from 1. 22 to 3. 35 ppm.
- TTHMs (Total Trihalomethanes): Detected at 13. 4 ppb (Limit: 80 ppb).
- HAA (Haloacetic Acids): Detected at 4. 38 ppb (Limit: 60 ppb).
Inorganic Contaminants
- Nitrate: Detected at 1. 39 ppm (Limit: 10 ppm). Sources include fertilizer runoff and septic tanks.
- Barium: Detected at 0. 0357 ppm (Limit: 2 ppm). Sources include drilling waste and natural deposits.
Lead and Copper
- Lead: The 90th percentile value was 6. 64 ppb (Action Level: 15 ppb). No sites exceeded the action level.
- Copper: The 90th percentile value was 0. 124 ppm (Action Level: 1. 3 ppm). No sites exceeded the action level.
- Note: Lead and copper testing was conducted in 2019; results are included in this 2021 report.
Violations
The report notes two violations from the previous year (2020) that were corrected:
- Failure to sample for Dioxin: Corrected by resuming the sample protocol immediately.
- Failure to sample for PCBs: Corrected by sampling, issuing a public notification, and inclusion in the 2020 report. Compliance was achieved in 2021.
Health and Safety Information
- Vulnerable Populations: Individuals with compromised immune systems (e. g. , cancer patients, organ transplant recipients, HIV/AIDS patients), the elderly, and infants are at higher risk from microbial contaminants.
- Lead Exposure: To minimize lead exposure, residents are advised to flush their tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking, especially if the water has been sitting for several hours.
- Source Water Assessment: A formal Source Water Assessment by the PA Department of Environmental Protection has not yet been completed.
