Overview
The Williamsburg Municipal Authority (WMA) has released its 2019 Consumer Confidence Report. This document details the quality of drinking water provided to approximately 703 customers in Williamsburg Borough and portions of Catherine and Woodbury Townships. The water source is high-quality groundwater drawn from the Gatesburg Aquifer via three production wells.
Water Source and Infrastructure
- Source: Groundwater from the Gatesburg Aquifer.
- Location: Three production wells located along Briarwood Lane, south of the intersection of Sage Hill Drive and Taylor Street in Woodbury Township.
- System Components: The system includes three wells, a treatment/control building, two storage tanks (capacities of 508,000 and 512,000 gallons), approximately 18 miles of transmission/distribution lines, and a booster station.
- Treatment: The only required treatment is disinfection via the addition of chlorine.
Production Statistics
- Permitted Capacity: The system is permitted to supply up to 1,440,000 gallons per day.
- 2019 Usage: The system provided an average of 141,375 gallons per day (51,602,000 total gallons) in 2019.
- Well Capacities:
- Well No. 1 & 2: 475,200 gallons per day each.
- Well No. 3: 828,000 gallons per day.
Contaminant Monitoring Results
The WMA monitored for contaminants between January 1 and December 31, 2019. No violations were recorded.
Disinfectants and By-Products
- Chlorine: Used to control microbes. Levels ranged from 0. 97 to 2. 0 ppm.
- Total Trihalomethanes (TTHM): A by-product of disinfection. The highest level detected was 11. 4 ppb (Limit: 80 ppb).
Inorganic Contaminants
- Nitrate: Detected at 1. 35 ppm (Limit: 10 ppm). Source: Fertilizer runoff, septic tanks.
- Barium: Detected at 0. 0278 ppm (Limit: 2 ppm). Source: Drilling waste, erosion of natural deposits.
- Arsenic: Detected at 1. 03 ppb (Limit: 10 ppb). Source: Erosion of natural deposits, orchards.
- Selenium: Detected at 4. 26 ppb (Limit: 50 ppb). Source: Petroleum/metal refineries, mines.
Lead and Copper
- Lead: The 90th percentile value was 6. 64 ppb (Action Level: 15 ppb). No sites exceeded the action level.
- Copper: The 90th percentile value was 0. 124 ppm (Action Level: 1. 3 ppm). No sites exceeded the action level.
Health and Safety Information
- Vulnerable Populations: Individuals with compromised immune systems (e. g. , cancer patients, organ transplant recipients, HIV/AIDS patients), the elderly, and infants are at higher risk from microbial contaminants.
- Lead Exposure: While lead levels were within limits, the report advises flushing taps for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before use if water has been sitting for several hours.
- Source Water Assessment: A formal assessment by the PA Department of Environmental Protection has not yet been completed.
